Axios
Since being introduced to his superlative Axios Cabernet Sauvignon a few years back, we’ve gotten to know proprietor Gus Kalaris pretty well. A successful Maryland-based wholesaler by trade, he sells some of California’s finest wines on the East Coast. So he leveraged his Napa connections and hooked up with winemaker Bob Egelhoff, a guy with serious cellar know-how and the right fruit sources, to produce a luxury Cabernet that could compete with the best in his portfolio. Such was the birth of Axios, and the national following that has resulted. Gus is a guy who knows how to live large, and eating and drinking well is never an issue in his company. Yet he felt he was missing a large segment of the market with only one (high-end) wine. So he created two cousins that are far easier on the wallet and tend to embarrass similarly priced competition in blind tastings. Trust us; Gus doesn’t do anything halfway at any level, so wherever your comfort level lies, you will find quality in the glass.
