Etude  

Etude was founded in 1982 by Tony Soter (in his words) 'to honor the craft of winemaking.' Tony has always been a highly respected consultant whose services have been enlisted by the likes of Dalla Valle, Niebaum-Coppola, Spottswoode and Araujo, among others. Yet he could only pursue his ambition so far in making wine for others, and he struck out on his own in order to elevate his game. It worked. Having achieved unquestionable success as something of a one-man show, Tony sold the operation to Beringer Blass – now Foster’s Wine Estates – in 2001 and truly had it all: autonomy from corporate meddling (he wasn’t going anywhere, and that was part of the deal) and deep pockets to pay the bills. He was living the winemaker’s dream. The new opportunity led Tony to the inevitable conclusion that he was going to need top-drawer help, and he brought in two very capable field generals in the form of day-to-day winemaker Jon Priest and viticulturalist Franci Ashton. The team worked as a single entity in order to ensure that new ownership meant something only to the bank, not the bottle. From new vineyard development to continuity of style to an ever-finer tuning of their network of growers, the trio sharpened the sword at every step.
