Tablas Creek
In the late 1980’s the Perrin family, proprietors of Château de Beaucastel in France, and Robert Haas, founder of Vineyard Brands here in America, set out to create a Châteauneuf-du-Pape style vineyard here in the New World. After searching all over California for just the right climate and soil, the partners decided on a 120-acre parcel in Paso Robles, just twelve cool miles from the Pacific Ocean.
The property’s high elevation and shallow, limestone soils are of the same geological origin as those in Châteauneuf. The area’s climate gives them exactly what they want with warm sunny days and nightly coastal breezes. The last step was to ensure the highest quality grapes and to do this the Perrin family imported multiple clones of eight different varietals from their French Estate. Tablas Creek winemaker Neil Collins believes that minimum human intervention in the winemaking process preserves the wine’s link to its place and origin. All of the Tablas Creek vineyards are organic, dry-farmed whenever possible and picked when completely ripe.
