Though Mortlach is not a name that is familiar to most single malt drinkers, most of you have already had it and never knew it since it is a base for many of the Johnny Walker blends. Gordon and MacPhail, World Renowned Independent Bottlers have managed to procure some of the finest casks that Mortlach has to offer. The nose is rich with warm barley, apple blossom and orange peel and a palate that's slightly warm, with sweet golden raisins, a hint of vanilla and well-integrated sherry. Contrary to what the name implies, these guys never fail. They don't even miss a beat. Co-founders James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail, along with their apprentice John Urquhart, developed one of the first whisky brokerage businesses over 110 years ago. Specializing in single malt whiskies from famous distilleries such as Macallan, Glenlivet, Glen Grant and Mortlach, they began to select and fill ex-sherry casks with various single malts and mature the whisky for much longer than was customary at the time. They were one of the first to recognize the importance of maturation in the creation of fine malt whisky and to realize the truth of the old adage: "the wood makes the whisky." For three generations now, the Urquhart family has continued the traditions of cask selection and maturation, and today they own the largest stock of well-aged whisky in all of Scotland. As Jim Murray, author of "The Whisky Bible" once said, "Gordon & MacPhail is a name that makes the heart of us whisky veterans skip a beat." One sip and you'll understand.
