2011 Caravaglio Salina Bianco Salina
This was the star of the show at one of the most memorable wine lunches we’ve ever experienced. Grown on a verdant island near Sicily, it’s an incredibly refreshing presentation of peaches and lemon zest with a hint of sea spray that’s true to its island pedigree. If it’s possible to bottle the slight chill of a Mediterranean breeze on a sailboat excursion, Caravaglio has done it with this dry Malvasia. Try this, and we promise you’ll be back for a refill.
Imagine endless sunshine, lavishing sloping hillsides and ancient volcanic shores pounded by surf and misted with sea spray. For proprietor and winemaker Antonio Caravaglio, the tiny island of Salina near Sicily (just off of the toe of the Italian Peninsula) is not only paradise, it's home. The only item this island lacks is an abundance of fresh water. Grapevines - which require less water than other plants - are a perfect fit and they thrive in the volcanic soils. Upon finishing his Agrarian studies, Antonio returned to his roots on the island and dedicated himself to his family's vineyard near the little village of Malfa. Historically this area was known for producing oxidized sweet wines (think Marsala), but Antonio sparked a revolution. He spent a lot of time studying the land and planting thoughtfully and in 1990 he built a modern cellar to continue focusing on quality production. His efforts have caught our eye… this was some of the best juice we tasted on a recent trip to southern Italy.About Caravaglio
