Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

2007 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
Simply one of the most consistent and reliably delicious Cabernets being made in California. Add in the star power of the ’07 vintage, and this is Cab on steroids. Even in its youth, it’s the total package. A sexpot of purple berry and black fruits with rich, coating tannins that refuse to leave the tongue. Bravo!

2006 Ridge Runner 'Longrider' Red Mendocino
The Ridge Runner rides with the sole purpose of delivering value where it counts: In your glass. Wednesday night reds, tailgate specials, neighborhood block parties, a no brainer...however you want to think of these, the consistent theme is 'taste-per-dollar.' Not every occasion calls for expensive wine. We get it. That doesn't mean that you have to muscle down swill or apologize for what you're serving. Here's to drinking wisely and economic recovery!

Juicy, bright and fun. Red fruits and ripeness with nary a harsh line in sight. When the grill starts smoking and there are thirsty campers with empty glasses, look no further.

$13.46 btl. / Mixed Case
  2008 Attems Pinot Grigio Collio
A harsh rebuke to those who would argue that Pinot Grigio is as also-ran in the world of great whites. It just has to be made the right way! From its enticing mineral and green-skinned fruit nose to an almost creamy mid-palate texture, this is just plain great stuff.

2006 Ridge Runner Cabernet Sauvignon North Coast
The Ridge Runner rides with the sole purpose of delivering value where it counts: In your glass. Wednesday night reds, tailgate specials, neighborhood block parties, a no brainer...however you want to think of these, the consistent theme is 'taste-per-dollar.' Not every occasion calls for expensive wine. We get it. That doesn't mean that you have to muscle down swill or apologize for what you're serving. Here's to drinking wisely and economic recovery!

It's awfully tough to find tasty Cabernet with actual varietal character for this kind of dough. Black cherries and oak toast with just the right dose of tannin to keep things on the level. What you don't buy, we'll drink ourselves!

2006 Pursuit 'Campfire Red' Napa Valley
Our staff reaches for Campfire more often than any other Pursuit wine. Cabernet Sauvignon pulls the wagon, and this is an eye-popping display of sexed-up black fruits and luscious, smoky oak. Imagine dangling a tiny piece of toffee above a wood fire and then dropping it into warm cherry compote. A flavor explosion!

  2007 Streamside Chardonnay Edna Valley
Thanksgiving Holiday Special Price: $13.56/btl.
We didn't think that we could top last year's release in the 'taste-per-dollar' department, and we're thrilled to be dead wrong. Fresh apple and peach flavors spring to life on the palate and its cool-climate spine whisks it all away in style. Why yes, another glass would be in order.

2007 Hourglass 'Blueline Estate' Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
Robert Parker seemed to like what he found, praising this wine’s 'wonderfully refined, complex, and fragrant nose of black fruits, spring flowers, charcoal and graphite is followed by a full-bodied, dense, velvety-textured wine with superb opulence and a heady, long finish with no hard edges. It is a beautiful Cabernet Sauvignon that seems nearly ready to drink, but there is so much depth that it conceals the serious structure the wine possesses.' Sorry, folks… six-bottle limit.

2008 Meiomi by Belle Glos Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast
The entry-level Pinot from the family responsible for Caymus Vineyards is a champion in the 'taste-per-dollar' category. Blending from carefully selected vineyard parcels (they do have an eye for great dirt), they've created a value proposition worth noting. Primary fruit notes of wild red berry and cranberry get a little allspice and oak tickle on the palate. All in all, it just blatantly outperforms its price tag. That's something we can get behind with a hearty endorsement.

2007 Edge Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
Napa Valley Cabernet for under twenty bucks. Go back and read that sentence again, because it’s not a misprint. Try finding one worth drinking for that price, let alone one that actually drinks well. Want a mouthful of dark Cab berry fruit with some spice-box and oak toast and feel like you’re getting away with larceny? This is our insider trading special without the potential new friends to be made in federal prison. You can thank us later!

2006 Ehlers Estate Merlot St. Helena
This organically-farmed property represents the heart of Napa Valley… literally. 100% of their profits help fund one of the world’s largest cardiovascular research trusts. Their Merlot is a superstar, overflowing with creamy black fruits, currants and toasty oak notes, a forceful answer to those who would contend that Merlot can’t hang with the big boys. This is great juice with a purpose beyond profit. We highly recommend that you support the cause.

2007 Clos du Caillou 'Vieilles Vignes' Cotes-du-Rhone
Regularly one of our favorite cellars in France to visit, this emerging superstar of the Rhone wowed us again with their 2007 lineup. As Robert Parker has noted, 'Year after year, this estate continues to produce some of the finest Chateauneuf-du-Papes and Cotes-du-Rhones.' We took one swirl from a barrel sample of this release and asked how much was available. Swimming in blackberry, anise and warm mineral undertones, this is a wholly modern twist on a classic region. Over-delivery with every sip!

  2007 Cordella Rosso Montalcino
This was a ringer, by far the least expensive bottle in a blind tasting of Brunellos. It not only held its own, but finished in the top three. Smoky cherry and red fruit goodness with some warm earth and subtle oak undertones with all manner of Italian style points. We can’t reveal who was in the lineup for fear of repercussions, but let’s just say we were duly impressed by what we tasted. You will be too.

2006 Switchback Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
The brightest light of the property, this Cabernet delivers layer after layer of flavor. Its dark, brooding color hints at what’s to come when it hits the tongue. Creamy currant and black cherry notes are lifted by a mocha-espresso flourish on the finish that elevates it to another level. It’s no wonder we have people clamoring for this year-round. Very limited availability… six-bottle limit.

2006 Pazzo Red Blend Napa Valley
Robert Parker wrote of this release: '…it offers a boatload of pleasure at a realistic price. It is a peppery, spicy, slightly herbal, deliciously fruity red that is meant to be consumed during its first 2-4 years of life… Pazzo remains the perfect bistro wine from proprietor Claus Janzen’s blend of Sangiovese and a few other grapes.'

Claus Janzen’s affiliation with Caymus Vineyards afforded him access to some pretty cool properties when Bacio Divino was getting started. As Caymus’ export manager, his wheeling and dealing put him in contact with some top-shelf growers who were willing to part with a ton or two here and there. Like half the denizens of Napa Valley, Claus dreamed of monkeying around with a few barrels in the garage and seeing what came of it. He couldn’t have known that one day the Parkers of the world would be singing his praises.

2006 Chronicle Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast
Mark our words that you will be hearing more about this producer. An inaugural release made by noted Pinot magician Ted Lemon (most notably of Littorai), this is just plain, old-fashioned delicious. As Wine Spectator observed, 'it's trendy for California Pinot Noir producers to say they make wine in the Burgundian tradition, but (Lemon) is the real deal.' We were thoroughly impressed with this debut in its marriage of cherry and raspberry fruit overtones with clean, refreshing acidity. It's no surprise considering the pedigree of the vineyards and winemaker involved. 495 cases made.

2007 Sokol Blosser Pinot Noir Dundee Hills
One of Oregon's vineyard pioneers, this outfit first put plant to soil in 1971. They've been perfecting their craft ever since, and '07 may well be their high water mark. A heady aromatic profile leans toward the dark berry spectrum with the subtle forest floor and truffle edge familiar to fans of Oregon Pinot. This is more Mozart than heavy metal, but the bass notes are all there for the hedonist. It's worth a listen, a taste and a nod.

2005 Rutherford Ranch 'Rhiannon' Proprietary Red Napa Valley
How on earth did they pull off a Napa wine that tastes like this for the price tag below? We’re baffled and thrilled at the same time. Sweet boysenberry and blue fruits with a jolt of vanilla bean character put it in the company of much spendier competition. They just forgot to add the sticker shock. We really can’t make it much easier for you than this.

2005 Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red Napa Valley
The alpha male of the pack, this got the love from Robert Parker and Wine Spectator, with the latter praising it as 'Ripe, rich and complex, with layers of black cherry, wild berry, currant and cherry kirsch flavors that are bold, rich and persistent, ending with a long, intense yet elegant aftertaste.' Big points + big demand = us waving good-bye to it quickly.

2005 Waypoint Weiss Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
We only made 474 cases of this cooler-climate gem (better for letting the fruit ripen long and slow). The best version yet from the Weiss vineyard, it presents seductive aromas of crushed raspberries and wild red fruits. Subtle oak integration fleshes out the palate, and the cool site growing kicks in some acidity. Oh, and you'll love it too.

2007 Streamside Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley
Citrus and lime blossom aromas with an ultra clean palate weight. This one just disappears and leaves nothing but lingering fruit nuances behind. There's not a bit of oak to interfere with its delivery. SB as it should be.
