2007 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
Simply one of the most consistent and reliably delicious Cabernets being made in California. Add in the star power of the ’07 vintage, and this is Cab on steroids. Even in its youth, it’s the total package. A sexpot of purple berry and black fruits with rich, coating tannins that refuse to leave the tongue. Bravo!

2007 Edge Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
Napa Valley Cabernet for under twenty bucks. Go back and read that sentence again, because it’s not a misprint. Try finding one worth drinking for that price, let alone one that actually drinks well. Want a mouthful of dark Cab berry fruit with some spice-box and oak toast and feel like you’re getting away with larceny? This is our insider trading special without the potential new friends to be made in federal prison. You can thank us later!

2005 Rutherford Ranch 'Rhiannon' Proprietary Red Napa Valley
How on earth did they pull off a Napa wine that tastes like this for the price tag below? We’re baffled and thrilled at the same time. Sweet boysenberry and blue fruits with a jolt of vanilla bean character put it in the company of much spendier competition. They just forgot to add the sticker shock. We really can’t make it much easier for you than this.

2007 Pursuit Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley
The spirit of springtime! Always among our most popular offerings, our Sauv Blanc is a pure, focused expression of Napa Valley fruit. Firmly planted in the realm of melon, grapefruit and fig flavors with cleansing acids, it nearly begs you to take another sip.

  2007 Streamside Chardonnay Edna Valley
We didn't think that we could top last year's release in the 'taste-per-dollar' department, and we're thrilled to be dead wrong. Fresh apple and peach flavors spring to life on the palate and its cool-climate spine whisks it all away in style. Why yes, another glass would be in order.

2005 Broken Spur Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
We'll be the first to admit that 'work' for us is more of an adventure than a job. While we dare not calculate the overtime, the wine business is indeed a labor of love. We get to live in one of the world's most beautiful wine regions, play poker with famous personalities in the business, eat some pretty good food from time to time… it's not terrible. But the one thing that truly brings us back to what makes this vocation special is making wine. It is a wholly unique creative process. We have a team of very talented cellar gurus who guide the actual fermentation process. These are guys with degrees from places like UC Davis and Fresno State who understand the nuts-and-bolts chemistry of the process, and frankly we just stay out of the way. But the fun part - and to our mind the element where a wine's real personality evolves - is the blending process. It's not unlike cooking, where it's about recognizing how different flavor components (the "spice rack") will ultimately meld together to form a cohesive whole. We're intimately involved with this stage for Broken Spur, and are proud to say that we think we nailed it with the '05 Cabernet. For a $30 Napa Cab, it delivers.

2006 Oeno Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles
We’ve long been aficionados of Paso Robles Cabernet, but the Rhone varietals from that area tend to steal the spotlight. A few more extreme-value finds like Oeno and that may change! Packed with purple fruits and subtle oak spices, this earned high marks with our tasting panel. It’s the sort of 'Wednesday night' Cabernet that you can open without guilt or remorse over the price and still enjoy every sip. We approve!

2006 Chronicle Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast
Mark our words that you will be hearing more about this producer. An inaugural release made by noted Pinot magician Ted Lemon (most notably of Littorai), this is just plain, old-fashioned delicious. As Wine Spectator observed, 'it's trendy for California Pinot Noir producers to say they make wine in the Burgundian tradition, but (Lemon) is the real deal.' We were thoroughly impressed with this debut in its marriage of cherry and raspberry fruit overtones with clean, refreshing acidity. It's no surprise considering the pedigree of the vineyards and winemaker involved. 495 cases made.

2006 Ramey Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
Fans of superlative Cabernet know David Ramey’s name well. He’s worked at some of the top houses in Bordeaux and California over his distinguished career, and he’s arguably never been doing it better. Of this release, Robert Parker tasted 'plenty of chocolaty, black currant fruit intermixed with licorice, roasted herbs, and underbrush.' It bears David’s fingerprints alright: ripe fruit, luxuriously silky tannins and just enough garter belt showing (from the wine, not David) that you can’t take your eyes off of it. The hits just keep on coming from one of our favorite cellars.

2007 Hourglass 'Blueline Estate' Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
Robert Parker seemed to like what he found, praising this wine’s 'wonderfully refined, complex, and fragrant nose of black fruits, spring flowers, charcoal and graphite is followed by a full-bodied, dense, velvety-textured wine with superb opulence and a heady, long finish with no hard edges. It is a beautiful Cabernet Sauvignon that seems nearly ready to drink, but there is so much depth that it conceals the serious structure the wine possesses.' Sorry, folks… six-bottle limit.

2006 Blind Justice Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
100% single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from the portion of Oakville that Robert Parker has called 'the tenderloin of Napa Valley.' Wine Spectator called it 'Firm and tight, full-bodied and well-structured, with a mix of rich, spicy currant, cedar, pencil lead, blackberry and mineral. Gains depth and persistence on the finish...' This vineyard always delivers.

2006 Pazzo Red Blend Napa Valley
Robert Parker wrote of this release: '…it offers a boatload of pleasure at a realistic price. It is a peppery, spicy, slightly herbal, deliciously fruity red that is meant to be consumed during its first 2-4 years of life… Pazzo remains the perfect bistro wine from proprietor Claus Janzen’s blend of Sangiovese and a few other grapes.' Claus Janzen’s affiliation with Caymus Vineyards afforded him access to some pretty cool properties when Bacio Divino was getting started. As Caymus’ export manager, his wheeling and dealing put him in contact with some top-shelf growers who were willing to part with a ton or two here and there. Like half the denizens of Napa Valley, Claus dreamed of monkeying around with a few barrels in the garage and seeing what came of it. He couldn’t have known that one day the Parkers of the world would be singing his praises.

2008 Meiomi by Belle Glos Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast
The entry-level Pinot from the family responsible for Caymus Vineyards is a champion in the 'taste-per-dollar' category. Blending from carefully selected vineyard parcels (they do have an eye for great dirt), they've created a value proposition worth noting. Primary fruit notes of wild red berry and cranberry get a little allspice and oak tickle on the palate. All in all, it just blatantly outperforms its price tag. That's something we can get behind with a hearty endorsement.

2008 Broken Spur Pinot Noir Carneros
The first Spur Pinot! Sourced from Carneros soils that have long been recognized as great vineyard plots, this is going to move quickly once folks get their lips on it. Supple raspberry and Bing cherry with just the right texture to stricke a balance between red wine satisfaction and Pinot elegance.

2007 Fairhope Cabernet Sauvignon North Coast
It’s no secret that everybody’s looking for value these days, and we found it in spades with Fairhope. Produced from two rock solid North Coast vineyard sources (including the increasingly well-regarded Shannon Ridge ranch), it’s all about 'taste-per-dollar.' Wild berry fruits and kirsch with some mint notes are ripe and plushy on the palate, all the better to showcase this wine’s charms. No need for years of cellar time here… it’s one to drink while some of the big dogs mellow in your cellar. Only 560 cases made.

  2007 Broken Spur Proprietary Red
You know when you see a big-league slugger hit a bomb and walk a few steps to admire his handiwork? We're pretty sure our winemaker did the same thing here. All black cherry polish with a sultry mocha edge, this just does not taste like $25 wine. Only 200 cases made of this little gem and it won't be around come winter.

  2008 Conundrum White Wine California
The blend always changes, but the core remains the same: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Muscat Canelli in one wildly successful white wine. Annually among our most popular offerings, Conundrum is packed with creamy peach, tangerine, vanilla and honeysuckle flavors and just a touch of sweetness to fatten up the palate weight. From Asian food to a cocktail sipper, it's everybody's friend.

2006 Ladera Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
It’s awfully rare to find Napa Cabernet of this quality and pedigree for under $50. Blended from the Ladera home vineyard on Howell Mountain and the estate-owned Lone Canyon property west of Yountville, we’re talking primo fruit and the winemaker to get it done in Karen Culler. Laced throughout the nose and palate with dark fruits like blackberries and black cherries, there’s also a chocolate note to the tannins that speaks to our inner hedonist. Great people and great wine… what’s not to like?

  2008 Attems Pinot Grigio Collio
A harsh rebuke to those who would argue that Pinot Grigio is as also-ran in the world of great whites. It just has to be made the right way! From its enticing mineral and green-skinned fruit nose to an almost creamy mid-palate texture, this is just plain great stuff.

2006 Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
Wine Spectator: Pure, rich and concentrated, this bold, graceful wine offers a deep core of earthy currant, blackberry and plum, with hints of herb, mocha and black licorice, giving it uncommon complexity and depth. Ends with firm tannins and a long, persistent finish.
