Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

1998 Moet et Chandon Dom Perignon Rose Champagne
The rare and elusive Dom Rose! Robert Parker's Wine Advocate wrote, 'Medium salmon-amber color. Delicate nose of fresh crushed raspberries, white pepper and chompoo / rose apple. The palate is well structured with a nice backbone of crisp acidity providing freshness to the silken texture and judicious amount of toast. Very long finish with lingering hints of fresh ginger.' When you really want to impress, this always does the trick. Very limited availability.

2006 Kapcsandy 'Roberta's Reserve' Napa Valley
Founded by Lou Kapcsándy on the site of the State Lane property (the soul of Beringer's Private Reserve Cabernet for more than 20 years), the vineyard was replanted under the guidance of famed consultant Helen Turley. The winery was then designed as a 100% functionally-driven facility… it is effectively a maternity ward for grapes and may be cleaner than hospital standards. Raised in the barrel by Rob Lawson - Helen's hand-picked successor - and Denis Malbec (who was literally born at Château Latour), this is a project that bears the fingerprints of serious players.

Lou's Old World perspective as a native of Hungary and decades-long importer of Bordeaux is reflected in his wine. Working alongside his wife Bobbie and son Louis Jr., the goal is to deliver brilliant California fruit and flavor with guts, backbone and stuffing, the sort of reds that can sit among the legendary first growths and convince experienced palates that it is one of them. We can guarantee that getting on the inside track now with this thrilling new project will put you in prime position down the road, because it's going to be scarce…

NV Smith Woodhouse 'Lodge Reserve' Port
Think of Ruby Port on steroids, and you're getting the picture here. A fantastic entry-level offering, this little gem has found a home on notable restaurant wine lists around the country. Intensely colored and packed with classic dried cherry and purple fruit notes, it's versatile as all get out with a nearly limitless shelf life.

  2001 Abrigo Vigna Montersino Barbaresco
One of this ancient village’s most promising young talents is applying his worldwide cellar experience to his family’s enviable vineyard site. Densely planted, low-yielding vines offer the perfect canvas for Orlando Abrigo to paint the glories of Barbaresco. Stewed cherries, smoked meat and subtle spiciness are lifted by a core of sweet fruit and phenomenally balanced. Precision winemaking meets world-class raw materials.

2007 August Briggs 'Old Vines' Zinfandel Napa Valley
This release is 750 cases worth of deliciousness produced from three plots of Napa Valley’s true old-vine treasures. The squatty little head-trained (no trellising) plants that make driving through Calistoga so magical during mustard season also deliver the goods in the bottle. Chocolate and cherries with a touch of mocha and vanilla bean and a brilliant mouthfeel. Zinheads take note: this is your kind of ride.

  2006 Albarossa Salice Salentino
From the heel of Italy’s boot in Puglia, this has all the flavor components you’d expect from a warm Mediterranean region. Dried rose petals, ripe black fruits. Utterly satisfying and clean, this is a collision of ancient tradition and modern technique. Put some south in your mouth.

2006 Altozano Tempranillo-Cabernet Tierra de Castilla
This state-of-the-art central Spanish winery was designed with the sole purpose of delivering value. We were floored by the black currant, cherry and wild game flavor interplay with just the right flourish of acidity on the finish. A real find from a world leader in the value department.

2006 Alpha Omega Proprietary Red Napa Valley
Locked, loaded and dripping with blackberry, currant and oak toffee notes, this is the sort of wine that has vintners paying top dollar for Monsieur Rolland’s input. His philosophy isn’t a formula, but it’s awfully damn consistent in its delivery. Yes, another glass would be in order.

2006 Alpha Omega 'Era' Proprietary Red Napa Valley
Care to reach for the good stuff? Wine Spectator: 'Combines richness, depth and complexity with elegance and finesse. Full-bodied, showing fleshy currant, black cherry and blackberry fruit, with hints of spice, nutmeg and black licorice. Fleshes out to reveal a long, lingering finish.' Six-bottle limit.

2008 Alpha Omega Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley
We can say without reservation that this is one of the most delicious California Sauv Blancs we’ve tried all year. It’s Sancerre with a suntan. Pineapple and apricot fruit notes with a delectable vein of crushed-rock minerality through the mid-palate. The one-word review would be 'wow.'

2005 Adobe Road Cabernet Franc Knights Valley
As Wine Spectator noted, '(proprietor Kevin Buckler) has recently delivered some outstanding bottlings under his Adobe Road label.' This Cab Franc can hang with the best of them, serving up a silky dose of sweet red berry fruit with a line of oak vanilla woven through the flavor profile. A mere 320 cases were made in ’05 and they’re going fast… this is an insider’s find all the way.

  2008 Attems Pinot Grigio Collio
A harsh rebuke to those who would argue that Pinot Grigio is as also-ran in the world of great whites. It just has to be made the right way! From its enticing mineral and green-skinned fruit nose to an almost creamy mid-palate texture, this is just plain great stuff.

2008 Borgo Belvedere Pinot Grigio Friuli
The climactic influence of the snow-capped Alps and stone-laded vineyard soils make for Pinot Grigio the way it’s supposed to be: like someone threw fresh grapefruit and a basket of cold pebbles into a blender. Trust us when we say that’s a good thing. Bravo!

  2006 B Cellars 'Blend 25' Cabernet-Syrah Napa Valley
We’ve been singing this producer’s praises since day one, and they’re finally getting their due. Robert Parker wrote of this jam ball, 'The inky/ruby/purple-hued 2005 Blend 25 (61% Cabernet Sauvignon and 39% Syrah) offers a big, sweet nose of blackberries, chocolate, coffee beans, and plums. Full-bodied with excellent fruit, low acidity, and a broad, savory mouthfeel, it should provide plenty of pleasure during its exuberant youth… the wines are clearly made in a fruit-forward style that should satisfy consumers and restaurants looking for immediate drinkability.' It pays to be on the inside track.

2005 Beringer 'Steinhauer' Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain
This single-vineyard gem comes from the ranch of legendary Beringer vineyard master Bob 'Taz' Steinhauer. Robert Parker praised its 'distinctive notes of crushed rocks, flowers, and red and black fruits' and noted that 'Beringer continues to turn out an impressive array of wines, proving that a gigantic global operation can be focused on quality and character.' This isn’t one you’re going to find at your local grocery store, we can assure of that. It’s amazing what happens when a big player focuses with laser intensity on a small-batch project.

2008 Meiomi by Belle Glos Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast
The entry-level Pinot from the family responsible for Caymus Vineyards is a champion in the 'taste-per-dollar' category. Blending from carefully selected vineyard parcels (they do have an eye for great dirt), they've created a value proposition worth noting. Primary fruit notes of wild red berry and cranberry get a little allspice and oak tickle on the palate. All in all, it just blatantly outperforms its price tag. That's something we can get behind with a hearty endorsement.
