Chardonnay White Wine
[shahr-dn-ey; French shar-daw-ne]
What could be better than the chameleon grape? Well, actually the grape itself has a flavor profile: green apple, melon, pear and sometimes tropical fruit. But when oak is introduced the grape can be transformed. Oak and malolactic conversion are stylistic choices that when applied lend the wine a creamy, rich texture and caramel, toast, even butterscotch aromas. The Chardonnay grape can masquerade as white Burgundy or Champagne and of course it can be bottled under its varietal name Chardonnay. There is a style for every palate.
Up-and-comer alert: Greg Brewer & Steve Clifton have been quietly making stand-out wines from the Santa Rita Hills appellation near Santa Barbara. Robert Parker recently heaped their collaboration with praise, saying these guys "consistently deliver delicious wines..." Check out the 2008 Mt. Carmel Chardonnay from Santa Ynez Valley called "A California version of a Batard-Montrachet."
