When we sat down to taste the 2001 S. Anderson Blanc de Noirs, we expected brawn and boldness from Cliff Lede, a favorite Napa Valley name known for its intense Cabernet blends. The boldness was there, but it was enveloped in an airy freshness that truly stunned us.A blend of 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Chardonnay, the Pinot came from a dry-farmed Carneros vineyard planted with 30-plus year old vines of the Martini clone, one of the only Pinot clones planted in the late 60s and early 70s in Carneros. The Chardonnay came from a suitcase selection - the phrase used to describe the vines smuggled into the U.S. in suitcases - of Chardonnay from a Grand Cru vineyard in Champagne. Winemaker Tim Milos used only the free run wine (the crème de la crème) and zero press wine to make the 2001 S. Anderson. It spent nearly five years in the cellar before being disgorged in April 2007.This limited production release offers the subtle cherry, red currant and toast aromas of Pinot-based bubbles with just the right amount of bottle age to add extra layers of depth. With its clean, refreshing mousse and integrated acidity, it offers style and structure aplenty at a price that says, 'screw the Euro.' There will be nothing but smiles when this cork is popped.

Oh, you toasty little devil. After six years en triage (on yeast), we had high expectations for this vintage bubbly and it still blew us all away. Tantalizing aromas of green apple and fresh baked biscuits with layers of citrus and subtle spice notes. Once we tasted it, we grabbed all that was remaining. This is one of the last remaining remnants of a Napa Valley icon. Get it before it's gone.
