2010 Terralsole Brunello Riserva

Terralsole is an absolutely elite Brunello producer hiding in plain sight. We like to think of Terralsole, owned by the gregarious and hilarious Mario Bollag, as Smart Man's Soldera," a peer of the exquisitely perfumed icon of Montalcino that costs five to ten times as much. We loved this one for its beautifully concentrated strawberry aromas, overlaid by anise, black cherry, and marzipan. An elegant beauty from a majestic vintage! By the way - our price on this Riserva is what many charge for the normale! "

Established in 1996, Terralsole, or "land toward the sun," is the inspiration of Mario Bollagg and his wife Athena, two artists who have combined their love for music and painting with their passion for winemaking. The estate's vineyards echo this harmony. Bollagg chose two parcels that would allow him to work with Montalcino's different terroirs, to craft a pure Brunello that blends the best of all worlds. Pian Bossolino, a rocky vineyard surrounding the estate on the southeastern slope of Montalcino, sits 1,200 feet above sea level and enjoys cooler weather with good winds. The other vineyard named Fonte Lattaia, or "milk spring," faces southwest and sits lower, at 750 feet. Its unique terroir of marine deposits and clay help the vines maintain a balance amid the warmer, dry climate of Montalcino. This yin and yang provide an elegant balance that is evident in each wine they produce. You'll thank us for this introduction.
