2011 ColleMassari Red Blend Tuscany Bolgheri
Grattamarco is a wine estate founded in 1977 on a beautifully situated hillside, sheltered from the cooling sea breezes in Bolgheri. It's owned by Maria Iris and Claudio Tipa, a brother and sister team who also own Poggio di Sotto, an iconic producer of Brunello di Montalcino.
Bolgheri [BOWL-ger-ee], on the coast of Tuscany, is the closest thing the Italians have to the Napa Valley, with a temperate Mediterranean climate and limestone-clay soils that are perfectly suited to Bordeaux varieties and Sangiovese.
This is a Bolgheri Superiore, which simply means that the wine was aged for two years before release, with at least a year in oak. In this case it was in wood 18 months, and 6 months in bottle. Like most Bolgheri wines, this is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and has a plush, soft personality that makes it so easy to drink. With aromas of cedar pencil, candied black cherry, and clove, this is gorgeous stuff.
