We were especially taken with the 2011 Vespera" wine from this estate, now entering its plateau of maturity. "Vespera" is Latin for vespers, or evening prayers. This is a lively, drinkable blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot, exclusively from Rocca's estate Grigsby Vineyard in Yountville. Look for black fruit like boysenberry, and blue fruit like dried blueberry, not to mention rooty, spicy notes too.
The wines of Napa Valley dentist-turned-vigneronne Mary Rocca and her gifted winemaker Paul Colantuoni deserve far greater renown. Paul is an alum of Mondavi, Neyers, Vieux Telegraphe in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and Brancaia in Tuscany. He has a deft touch, weaving depth, complexity, and sweet fruit while skillfully walking the tightrope safely over the soupy depths of over-ripeness.
