2012 Groth Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Oakville
An absolute prime cut of that magic, gravelly seam of cassis opulence that is Oakville. The 1985 was the first to receive a perfect score, and the vines were 27 years down the road in 2012. Gorgeous, moving.
In 1981 Dennis and Judy Groth had nearly completed the purchase of a vineyard in Sonoma when they realized that what they wanted to grow - Cabernet Sauvignon - was not planted there. So when Napa realtor and grape farmer Ren Harris called, it must have been more than chance. Upon his urging they headed over the hills from Sonoma to Napa by way of the Oakville Grade and there saw what would ultimately become their home and winery. Among distinguished neighbors and with their fruit going into some of Silver Oak's premium bottlings it just seemed right. Thirty-some years later their kids are in the fold at the winery continuing to keep the place family owned and operated. While Dennis concedes that growing and operating at this caliber "takes a large investment of patience, experience, and dedication, not to mention dollars," it sure seems to us that they're making a worthwhile endeavor.
