2012 Mathew Bruno Beckstoffer Georges IIICabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Rutherford

Mathew Bruno is from a longtime central valley farming family - his father Matt made his name operating a dairy supply company in Turlock. In 2009, Matt, Mathew, and Mathew's brother Tony released their first vintage of Mathew Bruno Cabernet Sauvignon, and we were hooked soon after.

This is quite a special Cabernet Sauvignon, from the historic Beckstoffer Georges III vineyard, once the core component of Beaulieu Vineyards' legendary Georges de Latour Private Reserve. The vineyard has been planted since 1895, and replanted as recently as 1988 when Andy Beckstoffer purchased it.

2012 was a superb growing season, and this wine represents the essence of Rutherford and its famed dusty minerality. Cassis is out in force too, with notes of mocha, black cherry, and baking spices as well. This wine will age 10 years if you need it to, but it tastes pretty darn fine right this evening.

When Mathew Bruno walked into our office and poured us the goods, we absolutely stopped in our tracks. In fact, we're somewhat embarrassed by the number of expletives that adorned our tasting notes. Even though this family is new to the game, they're working with serious fruit and making some even more serious juice. Placing an emphasis on sourcing grapes from some of the most heralded vineyards in Napa Valley, they certainly got our attention (and have managed to turn some heads over at Wine Spectator as well). These won't be around for long once the word starts to get out… don't say we didn't try to warn you.
