2012 Santa Duc Grande Grenache 66Grenache Rhone Valley Gigondas

Wines from the Gigondas are a hot commodity right now. One of the most important regions in the Southern Rhône, the red wines from Gigondas are unapologetically bold and brawny -- Karen MacNeil calls them “muscular.” They can be rustic too, but that’s part of the joy of Gigondas.

Domaine Santa Duc owner Yves Gras has achieved cult status for his organically grown, slightly sauvage wines that precisely reflect the terroir. Vinous gave this wine 93 points and with less than 100 cases imported to the US, it's going to go fast.

Gigondas is one of  the most prized areas of the Rhône and producers like Domaine Santa Duc demonstrate why. Vinous describes the 2012 Grand Grenache 66 as “deep ruby. Intense, deeply pitched aromas of raspberry liqueur, potpourri and cola, with a smoky mineral overtone. Plush and seamless in texture, with sweet red and dark berry flavors and a hint of candied lavender on the back half. Finishes broad, sweet and supple, with outstanding persistence and the firming influence of round, slow-building tannins.”
