2013 Le Cirque Red Blend Languedoc-Roussillon Cotes Catalanes
From the hot, windswept, schisty slopes of the Roussillon comes this supple red, redolent of super-ripe blackberries and wild thyme. The taste-per-dollar meter is pegged in the red zone on this one.
The Le Cirque brand is brought to us by Les Vignerons de Tautavel Vingrau (or VTV for short). The cooperative is named for the town of Tautavel and the vast amphitheater-shaped bowl of vineyards that stretch north towards Vingrau. This valley is not only a fantastic area for cultivating wines, it was put on the map in the 1970's when a 450,000 year-old fossilized human skeleton was founded in one of the caves high above the amphitheater. The Tautavel Man, as he became known, made flint tools from the rocks in the area way back then. Today, the flint is still doing active duty in the vineyards helping to impart character and distinction to the wines grown in these soils.
