We’re still savoring the memory of this wine. This was one of those elixirs that had us looking incredulously around the table at one another, silently asking ‘Are you tasting what I’m tasting?’ The Wine Advocate called it ‘A beautiful wine, the 2013 Monteverro sports a thickly extracted and slightly retro style that recalls the heyday of the super Tuscans…Dark fruit, spice, tobacco and cured leather come together as a united front.’ If you love great Napa Valley Cabernet, Bolgheri, or great Bordeaux, you need some of this wine.
Ornellaia. Sassicaia. Guado al Tasso. You’re likely already familiar with these titans of the Tuscan Coast that rival the great wines of Bordeaux and the Napa Valley, with plush personalities and mystically inviting aromatics. To this elite list you should add the wines of Monteverro. Monteverro is a 50 hectare farm in Capalbio, about 2 hours south of Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast. The estate was created by a young German entrepreneur named Georg Weber. Weber wasted no time developing this beautiful site into a world class vineyard, hiring Michel Rolland as a consultant, along with our friend Jean Hoefliger, who can do no wrong. At least when it comes to wine. “Monteverro is one of the most exciting young properties I have come across in a while.” – Antonio Galloni If you love great Cabernet with a soft, sweet fruit profile, these wines are for you.
A beautiful wine, the 2013 Monteverro sports a thickly extracted and slightly retro style that recalls the heyday of the super Tuscans. It offers a subtle twist of nostalgia, but it does so with a confident personality. Dark fruit, spice, tobacco and cured leather come together as a united front. The blend consists of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. The mouthfeel delivers ample power and textural richness.
This is a Bordeaux blend that competes with the best of Tuscany such as Sassiciaia and Ornellaia. It's so structured and refined with beautiful length and sophistication. Full body and gorgeous tension. Fantastic aromas and flavors of currants, plums and tile. Hints of hazelnuts and lavender. Linear and polished on the finish. A wine that delivers so much now but will be even better in four to five years. Best ever from here. From organically grown grapes.
