Winemaker Aryn Morell crafts this exquisite Bordelaise blend from the Cakebread’s estate vineyard called Lawrence Vineyard, as well as Seven Hills and Stillwater Creek. It’s stuffed to the gills with plush Cabernet and Merlot fruit, with notes of dusty black truffle, blueberry preserves, and cassis. It’s thoroughly satisfying and rich on the palate, the perfect foil for a Friday night grilled flatiron.
Mullan Cellars is the side project of an old friend of the firm: none other than Dennis Cakebread, whose parents launched the immensely successful Cakebread Cellars in the Napa Valley in 1972. In 1992, the family started talking about ways that they could grow without sacrificing the handmade quality of the Cakebread wines. They found their answer in 2010, when Dennis traveled to Walla Walla and, through a few fortuitous inquiries, was introduced to Aryn Morell—an alum of Silver Oak, Joseph Phelps, Quintessa, Chimney Rock, and Chappellet—who had recently moved back to his native Washington State.
