2013 Switchback Ridge Peterson Family VineyardCabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
A big, powerful Cab made by Bob Foley, who helped establish the reputations of Pride, Hourglass, and Paloma. Today he makes only Switchback and his own line of wines. This is a big beastie, filled with power and grace. Sweet black cherries and cassis aromas continue on the palate, viscous and mouthfilling.
Switchback Ridge is sourced exclusively from the Peterson Family Ranch Vineyard. This beautiful 100-acre parcel of land has been in the family since the early 1900s back when, like most of the Napa Valley, it was planted to walnut and prune orchards. Beginning in 1990, the remaining prune orchards were replanted with 20 acres of thriving Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petite Sirah vines. As luck would have it, this turned out to be prime real estate for vineyards planted to stalwart varietals – to put it into perspective, the prestigious Three Palms Vineyard is right next door.
The rich, rocky soil on which the vineyards are planted consistently produce low yields of intensely flavored fruit. There is only a handful of winemakers you call on to handle fruit like this and Robert “Bob” Foley is at the top of that list. With a resume like Pride Mountain Vineyards, Paloma and Hourglass, you know you’re in for extremely concentrated wines, with explosive flavor on the palate.
