The first Eggers to hit California came from Northern Italy, where the family had a history of grape growing. In America, they planted their first vineyard in Cazadero in the twenties. The timing could have been better; sadly, the Egger family lost their Cazadero ranch after the Great Depression but their love for the area remained. Frank and Ronita Egger were able to revive the family dream in their own way, founding Cazadero winery in Fairfax, where Frank served as mayor for 7 terms. They source their grapes from the Bei family’s vineyards, just about a mile and a half south of where the original Egger vineyard once stood. This “off the grid” family ranch boasts a small but exquisite ridgetop vineyard planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
