2014 Cornerstone Cabernet Sauvignon Calistoga


What defines Calistoga’s terroir, you ask? In our book, it’s ripeness—Calistoga is the hottest part of the Napa Valley, where the cooling breezes of the bay are less influential. Cornerstone’s 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is textbook, with fresh and dried black fruits like boysenberry and prune, mocha, anise and leather, and the kind of power that can only come from well-drained volcanic soils and intense sunshine, the same light that will be transmitted to you on a cold winter night as the short ribs bubble away in the oven.

In the fall of 1991, David Sloas visited the Napa Valley on a seemingly innocent wine holiday. During this trip, he ventured up Howell Mountain to taste wine with the iconic Randy Dunn of Dunn Vineyards. While there, he chatted with Randy about five tons of fruit that a buyer had backed out of purchasing. This discussion got David thinking, which soon prompted a phone call to his friend Michael Dragustsky. After agreeing that they were both insane, they purchased the grapes from Randy and were officially in the wine business. Having a deep love and appreciation for fine wine, the partners set forth to accept no compromises in the cellar by accessing the best grapes, the best barrels and the best facilities possible. They soon expanded their investments (some might suggest madness) by purchasing their own 12-acre plot as the primary source for their fruit.
