The standard-bearer of Hermitage has done it again with a stellar 2014 wine, loaded with aromas of crushed granite, pepper, and black plums. Vinous describes "Potent aromas of fresh black and blue fruits, licorice, spicecake and candied flowers on the deeply perfumed nose. Fleshy, seamless and expansive on the palate, offering vivacious blackberry, cherry, boysenberry and allspice flavors that deepen and spread out slowly on the back half."

Occasionally referred to as the “Pope” of Hermitage by his peers, Jean-Louis Chave’s reputation as the premier producer of Hermitage is richly deserved. The Chaves have been working the hills of the Northern Rhône in an unbroken line since 1481, and since the turn of the 20th century they have purchased parcels in multiple sites on the hill of Hermitage. This gives Jean-Louis enviable quality control in the cellar. Each parcel is vinified separately, and any barrels that don’t enhance the blend are promptly sold off to négociants. Only about 2,000-3,000 cases per year are made of Hermitage rouge. Syrah can be made anywhere in the world, but only Hermitage can be made in Hermitage. The wines have a striking granitic minerality, a meaty, bacony character, black cherry and boysenberry density, and the best have an ability to age 20 years easily. In short, Chave’s expressions are some of the great wines of France, in the same class as d’Yquem, Krug, Latour, Rayas, or Romanée-Conti. Between us, if you’re going to put any high-scoring red wines in your stash, you really can’t do much better than these.

This starts strong, with warm ganache, steeped fig and crushed blackberry flavors, then gains steam, picking up smoldering charcoal, bay leaf and juniper accents as the wine drives and expands through the finish. Offers a long echo of graphite, with the fruit keeping pace. Very impressive for the vintage. Best from 2020 through 2040. 2,500 cases made.

Vinous

Glass-staining ruby. Potent aromas of fresh black and blue fruits, licorice, spicecake and candied flowers on the deeply perfumed nose. Fleshy, seamless and expansive on the palate, offering vivacious blackberry, cherry, boysenberry and allspice flavors that deepen and spread out slowly on the back half. Closes on a minerally note, delivering building tannins, superb dark-fruit-driven persistence and lingering spiciness.
