2014 Melville Winery Syrah Santa Rita Hills
Father and son Ron and Chad Melville run an impeccable ship in their Santa Rita Hills property in Santa Barbara County. Melville Winery is a house of terroir, where the voice of the soil comes first, and the wine's fruit is unmarred by excessive new oak or any funny stuff in the cellar.
Their 2014 Estate Syrah, grown on sandy soils and made with 30% whole clusters—and no new oak—is turning a lot of heads these days. Ron and Chad describe their blockbuster 2014 Estate Syrah beautifully: Deep garnet in color, notes of violets, duck plum sauce and cocoa powder come forward initially. On the palate, intriguing components of boysenberry liqueur, salted caramel and vanilla bean mingle with savory hints of morel mushrooms, beef carpaccio and all spice."
We can't think of a smarter Syrah buy right now: not in California, Washington, or the Northern Rhône. There's way too much wine here for $30. Hop on this one. "
