2014 Shypoke 'The Keep' Red Calistoga

Shypoke is a joint project between husband and wife team Peter and Meg Heitz, on their 100-year-old family ranch in northwest Calistoga. Peter’s great-grandfather emigrated from France’s Alsace, and afrer working in Colma as a cemetery gardener, made his way to Calistoga, and bought 50 acres near what is today Highway 29, just south of town. The family grew grapes and sold them to home winemakers until 1928, when Mrs. Heitz said enough is enough, we’re planting fruit trees. Not until the late 1930s, afrer Repeal, did the family replant their prized Charbono vines, which produce 40% of this wine!

The Heitzes describe this wine as “The inaugural fruit from our estate Grenache. The finest barrels of our ancient Charbono. Interesting. Crowned with the singular barrel of our Back Breaker Petite Sirah. Delicious.” We loved this wine’s utter “gluggability,” packed with notes of black cherry, boysenberries, black tea. It’s what every Côtes-du-Rhône dreams of growing up to be, yet it is uniquely Californian.
