Here's a fabulously collectible and long-lived Cabernet to consider from the great Christian Moueix. It's a much smaller project than his Dominus Estate nearby.
Decanter flipped for the wine, saying Ulysses is "rapidly establishing itself as one of Napa's top addresses. The 2014 reveals a complex bouquet of briary fruit tones, wild plum and rich soil. On the palate the tannins are beautifully fine-grained, powdery and ample - a powerful but elegant frame for the wine's vivid fruit."
Hop on this one while you see it!
Ulysses is a special vineyard on the west end of Oakville purchased by Christian Moueix (of Dominus and Château Petrus fame) in 2008. We were only able to secure a small handful of cases of this opulent, cassis and red rose-scented beauty. You'll need to be lashed to the mast to keep you from heeding the siren call and draining the bottle! This is a wine for true collectors if we ever saw one.
The evolution of this wine has been phenomenal since I tasted it in barrel a year ago with the same black cherry, plum and citrus character but with a turn to orange leaf, dark Chinese tea, and mushroom. Full body, fine and velvety tannins with a touch of dust to the texture. So much chocolate and fruit undertones with forest floor and hints of tobacco, too. The mouthfeel and complexity are seductive. Better from 2022 but a joy to taste.
