Vincent Dureuil's Clos des Argillieres" is a fantastically earthy wine from vines near the Vosne border, planted in 1940. Black plums, loam, red cherry, and chopped herbs all come together in a lithe, sappy package. Terrific red burgundy! "

The walls of the Dureuil (doo-roy) cellar look like something out of a B-grade horror movie, as if someone has sprayed them down with fake cobwebs. It's frigid, damp, musty and - truth be told - a little creepy. The ancient stone cavern seems like a science experiment gone wrong, and yet it echoes one of the great mysteries of Burgundy: how such precise, pure, focused white wines can come to life in such an environment. Vincent Dureuil left us baffled yet again at this seemingly impossible dichotomy, and his lineup is always one of the true highlights of each buying trip. We literally buy every bottle we are offered. These are quite simply among the most compelling and delicious Chardonnays we tried in all of Burgundy. To miss them would be a mistake. Vincent is without a doubt one of the finest producers in all of the Côte Chalonnaise.
