Holy cow, what a Merlot. Galloni called this “plump, juicy and absolutely delicious. Dark cherry, raspberry jam, mocha and sweet spice all flesh out in the glass.” Our notes went even further: “Killer. So earthy. Anise. Savory. Violets, black cherries, amaro. The Merlot haters do not deserve to drink this wine.” Run, do not walk, to secure your share of this fabulous, deep ruby nectar.
By now you're likely familiar with the Arietta label, which was born out of a friendship/partnership between wine specialist and auctioneer Fritz Hatton and winemaker John Kongsgaard. Both lovers of classical music and classic wines, their inspiration for Arietta is rooted in a special 2.3 acre block of Cabernet Franc on Lee Hudson's iconic Carneros ranch. In 2005 Fritz Hatton and wife Caren bought out the Kongsgaard family's interest in Arietta and brought on former Harlan Estate powerhouse Andy Erickson as winemaker (he's also the man behind Screaming Eagle and Dalla Valle, as well). We hope you enjoy their wines as much as we do.
Blended with 7% Cabernet Franc, the deep garnet-purple colored 2015 Merlot has a red currants, kirsch and plum preserves nose with a spicy undercurrent and waft of forest floor and truffles. The medium to full-bodied palate shows good concentration with chewy tannins and an herbal lift to the finish.
The 2015 Merlot Hudson Vineyards is plump, juicy and absolutely delicious. Dark cherry, raspberry jam, mocha and sweet spice all flesh out in the glass, but it is the wine's freshness and overall vivacity that stand out most. An impeccably balanced wine, the 2015 will drink well for another 10-15 years, maybe more.
