We are still pinching ourselves that we were able to pick our very favorite barrel of Raphet Charmes-Chambertin, a wine whose past iterations remain some of the greatest red burgundies we've ever tasted. This has the black fruit power-punch of the 2015 vintage, with this vineyard's characteristic gaminess and poached red cherry and toasted herbs. This is worth every single penny - just give it at least a 10 to 20 year stretch in the cave, and you're going to be flabbergasted by its perfumes.
Gérard Raphet is a man of few words. In nearly an hour’s visit to his cellar, he rarely spoke more than a few sentences at a time. In fairness, he doesn’t have to explain anything once the wine starts being extracted from barrel. He merely fills the glasses and slyly smiles as the murmur grows among the group. His wares are Burgundy, through and through.
Crafting an astounding array of Pinot Noir, Gérard focuses his intensity and brilliant winemaking exclusively on the most fickle of grapes. His longstanding local connections afford him access to choice, old-vine parcels of some of Burgundy’s best known vineyards, a huge advantage for a small producer. The focus and purity that Raphet wines display on the palate are the direct result of these stellar sources. They are regularly critical favorites, so we suggest you get them before the media does.
