2015 Martinelli 'Giuseppe & Luisa' Zinfandel Russian River Valley

Martinelli’s reputation for Zinfandel is well-deserved. 50% of the 10 highest-rated Zinfandels in the history of The Wine Advocate are Martinelli wines. By the way? Add 4 points to the reviews you see above. This wine is completely underrated.

Simply dripping with intoxicating Zinfandel fruit, in a sweet-fruited, full-bodied format, this wine boasts notes of crushed huckleberries, boysenberry, and cherry, and is just downright dangerous to drink. Trust your wine merchant. Do not miss this wine.

Our tastings with the utterly vivacious Regina Martinelli, sales director for her family's 130-year-old winery, are always showstoppers. Every one of this winery's Chardonnays, Pinots Noirs, Syrahs, and Zinfandels is outstanding. If we know anything about what we're doing, the wines are going to turn you on. They have it all: brilliantly expressive fruit, concentration, and complexity. It's not often that a winery comes by and reminds us why we love wine so much. Put together a mixed case and experience the thrill for yourself. Most of these wines are sold only through the winery and are very hard to find.

At the higher end of the alcohol spectrum, these Martinelli Zinfandels are powerful wines for sure, but I hasten to add that they are beautifully balanced and in terms of flavor, tannin and complexity, they represent the pinnacles of ripeness in every sense. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Zinfandel Giuseppe and Luisa is scented of dried mulberries, plum preserves and blueberry pie with suggestions of hoisin sauce, sandalwood and sautéed herbs. With generous black berry preserves and spice flavors on the very full-bodied palate, it is a mouthful of rich, plush, pure hedonism.

A rich, boisterous wine, the 2015 Zinfandel Giuseppe & Luisa is explosive in the glass. Here, too, the flavors are bright and vibrant. Red-toned fruit and expressive floral notes abound. Voluptuous and intense, the 2015 possesses tremendous thrust in its flavors and overall feel. Even with all of its intensity, the 2015 retains considerable freshness and acidity to play off the forward fruit.
