2015 Seavey 'Caravina' Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

(Net Item - no discounts apply)

Lusciously deep and soft, Caravina shows a lively, open energy in a journey of layers that promises a wonderful evolution with time. Antonio Galloni praises the “notable density and pure power in its dark plum, chocolate, lavender and leather flavors.” Jim Duane and Philippe Melka are a winemaking dream team and this serious stunner is ready to win your loyalty.

Seavey Winery is firing on all cylinders. This gorgeous hillside vineyard in Conn Valley behind Meadowood resort is producing truly elite wines, entirely from their estate vineyards. It’s also thanks to Philippe Melka, a consulting winemaker who made his name at no less than Château Haut Brion, Dominus Estate, and Petrus, and today consults for the likes of Hundred Acre, Vineyard 29, and Lail. The guy is a pro, and Seavey was his first consulting gig in the Napa Valley.

The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Caravina packs a serious punch. Once again a real overachiever, the Caravina offers notable density and pure power in its dark plum, chocolate, lavender and leather flavors. The 2015 is going to need at least a few years to shed some of its baby fat, after which it should drink beautifully for a number of years. This is a very serious second wine from Seavey. At many Napa Valley properties, this would be the top wine.

Wine Advocate

The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Caravina is deep purple-black in color with a nose of cassis, licorice, blue fruits and red currants with touches of bay leaves and tree bark. Medium to full-bodied with a firm, grainy texture, it has great fruit expression and a nice herbal lift on the finish.

The entry-level Cabernet is the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Caravina which comes from individual lots from Seavey’s hillside blocks that are harvested and vinified separately. Made from 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot aged 20 months in 55% new French oak, it gives up outstanding notes of currants and black raspberry fruit intermixed with hints of crushed violets and licorice. With medium to full-bodied richness, fine tannin and impeccable balance, it will keep for 10-12 years (or more).
