2015 Smoking Gun Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

Smoking Gun is a new project from Cole Ballentine, the fifth generation in a line of St. Helena winegrowers. Cole is the son of Bill and Jane Ballentine, owners of William Cole Vineyards, and the grandson of Van and Betty Ballentine, owners of Ballentine Vineyards in St. Helena. Cole grew up in the vineyard, tending grapes, watching and learning, a natural métier considering his family background.

Now, with the help of his father Bill, Cole has brought us the newest project from William Cole Vineyards. This ancient stone winery was originally built in 1873 and was once home to Napa Valley’s first female winemaker and winery owner, Hannah Weinberger, who took over after her husband was murdered by a disgruntled former employee in 1882.

“Smoking Gun” refers not to the sad end of John Weinberger, but to an episode that happened on the road to California when he and Hannah were the victims of an attempted robbery of their stagecoach. John surprised and summarily vanquished the bandits with his Colt Navy revolver. Hence, Smoking Gun.
