2016 Almaviva 'Puente Alto' Maipo Valley

$134.95
JS97

Almaviva is a joint venture between Concha Y Toro and the Rothschild family, begun in 1998. Like her father before her saw in the Opus One project, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild saw the potential to create a world-class claret from these own-rooted, 37 year old vines on purely alluvial soils high in the “Puente Alto” zone of the Maipo Valley.

Out of the 17,000+ wines James Suckling and his team tasted in 2017, Almaviva 2015 was his very favorite. Considering that first-growths and the very best of Napa now sell for $300 and up, this follow-up 2016 is a peerless relative value. Suckling called it “A very fine and elegant Almaviva with fresh fruit and herb character. Medium-to-full body, tight and focused with very fine, linear tannins and a chocolate and light cedar undertone to the whole thing. Savory, too. Smoked meat and succulent. It's tight but opens with air. Classicism here. 66% cabernet sauvignon, 24% carmenere, 8% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot.”
