Andy Erickson brings his Screaming Eagle skills to this gorgeous proprietary red. 70% Cabernet Franc and 30% Merlot, the 2016 Arietta H Block is mysteriously dark and slow to reveal its secrets. When it does, wow! Stunning blackberry, kirsch and cassis are laced with cigar box and underbrush. A restrained, full-bodied palate supports layers of ripe fruit and savory notes framed by fine tannins and a long, mineral finish.
By now you're likely familiar with the Arietta label, which was born out of a friendship/partnership between wine specialist and auctioneer Fritz Hatton and winemaker John Kongsgaard. Both lovers of classical music and classic wines, their inspiration for Arietta is rooted in a special 2.3 acre block of Cabernet Franc on Lee Hudson's iconic Carneros ranch. In 2005 Fritz Hatton and wife Caren bought out the Kongsgaard family's interest in Arietta and brought on former Harlan Estate powerhouse Andy Erickson as winemaker (he's also the man behind Screaming Eagle and Dalla Valle, as well). We hope you enjoy their wines as much as we do.
Composed of 70% Cabernet Franc and 30% Merlot, the 2016 Proprietary Red H Block is deep purple-black in color and a little youthfully shy to begin, unfurling to reveal stunning blackberries, black raspberries, kirsch and cassis scents with touches of cigar box and underbrush. The full-bodied palate is relatively restrained with loads of savory layers superbly framed by ripe, fine-grained tannins, finishing long and mineral tinged.JD96
A co-fermented mix of 70% Cabernet Franc and 30% Merlot, all from the Hudson Vineyard in Carneros, the 2016 Red Wine H Block is a beauty that just sings of high-class Cabernet Franc with its forest floor, leafy herbs, iron, truffle, and sweet red and black fruits. With an incredible seamlessness, full body, awesome tannins, and a great finish, it's going to shine for two decades.WE95
This is a tremendously memorable and well-made cofermentation of 70% Cabernet Franc and 30% Merlot from one specific block of the mighty Hudson Vineyard in Carneros. Reduced slightly, it brims in graphite, earth and dried herb, with classically stylized secondary layers of cassis, lavender, anise and oak. The texture is sublime. Lovely now.WS92
Solid, with a gutsy edge to the mix of juicy black currant and blackberry compote flavors, inlaid with charcoal, bay leaf and tobacco accents. Dark but racy through the finish, revealing a smoldering hint. Cabernet Franc and Merlot.
