You would think that Chalk Hill sits on a strange outcropping of Chalk in Sonoma County, instead much of the soil in the AVA is volcanic ash that is white and therefore mistaken for chalk. If you love rich bold unapologetically CA style wines the Chalk Hill brings it. Cassis, cedar, wild cherry and chocolate dominate the palate. Held together nicely by firm tannin, this wine delivers the goods.
The Estate Red is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Merlot. Deep ruby-purple, it's scented of pencil lead, cedar, cassis, maraschino cherry, cigar box and chocolate with touches of cardamom and dried spices. The palate is medium to full-bodied and lushly fruited, with a firm frame of very ripe, grainy tannins.
