Following closely on the heels of the highly lauded 2015 vintage, the 2016 vintage was also a total blockbuster. The right-bank, Saint-Emilion and Pomerol, showed especially well. Recently re-tasted by the Wine Advocate, the Chateau Fonplegade has blossomed into a real star in the bottle. Since purchasing the estate with her husband Stephen in 2004, Denise Adams has overseen a hands on revitalization of the vineyard, an approach that has resulted in one of the most muscular and intense wines of the vintage, out-performing wines at many times the price of this 2016. What a steal!
A deep and smokey-grilled meaty nose begs for grilled dry-aged steaks and the deep plum and black cherry fruit and long finish will leave a smile on your face. This intense and deep merlot-based wine (90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc) is sure to impress now but can last and evolve into an even complex beauty through 2050! Open a bottle now and have your friends guessing if they are drinking top estate at a 10th of the price of the more expensive rivals like Chateau Angelus or Pavie! Blink and this one will be gone – grab a case or two now!
Pre-Arrival – January 2020
Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2016 Fonplegade opens with a very savory nose of smoked meats, tapenade, sautéed herbs and beef drippings over a core of plum preserves, chocolate-covered cherries and cedar chest plus wafts of violets and cigars. Medium to full-bodied, the palate possesses both intensity and elegance, with the black fruit layers superbly framed by firm, fine-grained tannins and wonderful freshness, finishing long and mineral laced.
