D’Arenberg doesn’t shy away from their title as one of the kings of Australian Shiraz, holding down a top spot in Wine & Spirits Magazine’s Hall of Fame. Not resting on any laurels yet, fourth generation winemaker, Chester Osborn, recently converted all of the family’s vineyards to organic & biodynamic farming while moving to solar power for the winery. This Shiraz is no laughing matter, and demands a big protein for pairing; the nose is intense with peppery spice and the generous palate boasts powerful tannins with loads of spicy bramble fruit.

Now in its 4th generation and 114th harvest, this stalwart of Australia’s McLaren Vale is making the best wines in its history. Francis “d’Arry” Osborn and his son Chester run this fun-loving winery with spirit, and produce 60 wines, from crisp Sauvignon Blanc to inky Shiraz on down to fortified, port-style wines.

Wine Enthusiast

With 4% Viognier, the nose of this Shiraz-based wine offers an appealing mix of plum, fig cake, mocha, olive and large helpings of savory spice. The palate is powerfully tannic and chalky in texture. Nevertheless, the spicy, brambly fruit finds its way to the fore, providing much needed softness. Give this a decant or air time or plenty of protein if drinking now.
