Gérard Raphet has two parcels of Clos Vougeot, and we chose this barrel from his ANCIENT, WWI-era vines in Le Grand Maupertuis, a special climat revered by Burgundy heavy-breathers. Profoundly concentrated and precise, loaded with black cherry fruit, white pepper, and allspice, give this at least 10 years in the cellar to really do it justice. A well-aged bottle of Raphet has been known to lead to more than one obsession.
Psst. Full disclosure time. The wines of the [rather serious] Gérard Raphet really are our favorite wines from the Côte de Nuits. There’s just something about them that can be exhilarating to those who have never tried them. They are intimate, personal red burgundies, with a perfume that simply draws you in and won’t let go, almost as much fun to smell as they are to drink. Imagine our glee when we were picking our favorite barrels from this place, which we label “RGS.” Try a few bottles and you’ll be transported yourself to the scene. Your tattoo appointment won’t be too far behind.
