“The Maiden” is made from the softer, more forward barrels of the famed Harlan Estate, but when they’re starting with such exquisitely fine fruit, how do they even choose? Jeb Dunnuck describes it like “The 2016 The Maiden showed brilliantly, and certainly, it’s not far off the grand vin. Playing in the medium to full-bodied end of the spectrum, it shows the purity, balance, and elegance that sets 2016 apart as well as beautiful complexity in its cassis-driven fruits and notes of leafy herbs, tobacco, tapenade, and spice.” Harlan fans, this great vintage will be such a fine addition to your cellar!

When it comes to wine pioneers credited with building Napa Valley's reputation as a producer of ultra luxury Cabernets, Bill Harlan may be second only to Robert Mondavi. In 1984, the then Northern California real estate developer and founder of Meadowood Resort and Spa made it his mission to produce the greatest red wine in California, a Napa Valley Grand Cru. After purchasing 240 acres in Oakville and planting 40 with Bordeaux grapes, Harlan teamed up two of the world's greatest winemakers, California's Bob Levy and Bordeaux' Michel Rolland, aka The Flying Winemaker.

The 2016 The Maiden showed brilliantly, and certainly, it’s not far off the grand vin. Playing in the medium to full-bodied end of the spectrum, it shows the purity, balance, and elegance that sets 2016 apart as well as beautiful complexity in its cassis-driven fruits and notes of leafy herbs, tobacco, tapenade, and spice. With silky tannins, terrific balance, and a great finish, it’s going to evolve for 20+ years or more.

Wine Advocate

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 The Maiden is a little closed to begin, giving way to notes of crushed blackberries, fresh blackcurrants, warm plums and black pepper with hints of tobacco, charcoal, menthol and underbrush. Full-bodied, the palate is taut and muscular, packed with tightly wound layers of black fruits and savory sparks, framed by ripe, grainy tannins and finishing on a lingering earthy note.

Vinous

The 2016 The Maiden is every bit as stunning from bottle as it was from barrel. Dark cherry, mocha, spice and new leather infuse the 2016 with tons of character. Deep, sensual and wonderfully inviting, the 2016 has so much to offer. It's one of the best - maybe the best - Maiden I have ever tasted. All of the pedigree and dimension of the vintage comes through so clearly.
