Holy smokes! Kapcsandy has hit a grand slam! The 2016 Grand Vin Cuvee is a double hundred pointer, Wine Advocate and Jeb Dunnuck are in agreement on this one. Produced from the highest quality blocks in their vineyard from the best barrel lots. The wine is multidimensional and has layers upon layers of goodness! Dark chocolate aromas, with notes of currant and anise. A medium bodied cab, that is bound with energy and balance. Savor the finish, because it seems to go on forever. This is excellence folks!
Lou Kapcsándy has seen it all in his 80 years. He was a freedom fighter in the Hungarian revolution of 1956, a refugee from the Soviets, served proudly in the US Army, and had a highly successful career as a chemical engineer before starting his own Bordeaux import company with his son Louis Jr. in 1999. Lou first came to the Napa Valley in the early 1960s, so when in 2000 Yountville’s State Lane Vineyard—the core of so many great Beringer Private Reserve wines—became available, he pounced. He replanted the vineyard to tighter spacing, hired the late Denis Malbec of Château Latour as a consultant, and one of the great wines of the Napa Valley was born.
The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin State Lane Vineyard is deep garnet-purple colored with a lovely crème de cassis core backed-up by the most amazing perfume of lilacs, oolong tea, camphor and dark chocolate plus gentle wafts of aniseed and red currants. Medium-bodied with fantastic vibrancy and intensity, the palate practically rings with spine-tingling energy. It slowly builds in the mouth to reveal layers of red and black fruits supported by a very finely grained frame and seamless freshness, leading to a drop dead gorgeous, perfumed lift on the long finish. Sex in a glass.
perfect wine and a legend in the making, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin from the Kapcsandy family is... Reminding me of a great vintage of Château Latour with its straight-up awesome bouquet of blackcurrants, lead pencil, crushed rocks, tobacco, and graphite, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a multi-dimensional, layered, seamless texture, perfect balance, and building structure. Made in an incredibly classic style, with one foot in Bordeaux with its elegance and class and another firmly in Napa with its layered richness, it can be drunk today with incredible pleasure yet will be a 40- to 50-year wine. Hats off to this estate for such an incredible wine!
