This is a powerful stunner. Much like Seattle’s Marshawn Lynch has been known to “go Beastmode”, the Cab has the power to run roughshod over your palate. With great mid palate weight and earthy tannic structure, this beauty is loaded with blackberry rosemary and spice. A hint of Petit Verdot rounds out the flavors.

La Jota, a historic brand established back in the 1800s on Howell Mountain, has it all. And today, they're making the best wines in the estate's history.Frederick Hess, an adventurous Swiss émigré and newspaperman, fell in love with the Rancho La Jota. He bought 327 acres because its rocky terrain, foggy mornings and stately redwoods reminded him of the places where some of the best wines from Europe were made. Hess thought he could make world-class wines on Howell Mountain. His hunch was right – a white wine from his second vintage won a medal at the Paris Exposition in 1900.But just as the wine business was starting to flourish, Prohibition began in 1920. While it only lasted for 13 years, Prohibition was enough to end Hess’ dream at La Jota. The rugged stone winery he built was abandoned and became a ghost winery. It remained empty for a half century, until Bill Smith, an oilman with a penchant for Napa Valley, discovered the old winery. He bought the estate in 1974, planted vines, and sold the first vintage of the new La Jota in 1982. A whole new chapter for La Jota began in 2005, when Jess Jackson and his wife Barbara Banke purchased the estate. They pumped in capital, brought in the talented winemaker Chris Carpenter (of Lokoya, Cardinale and Mt. Brave fame) to craft the best wines from the mountain fruit. The investment is paying off in the form of elegant, memorable wines that earn top scores from the most respected critics around. A mixed case of these opulent reds is a must!
A blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, 7% Malbec, 5% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is deep garnet-purple colored and features gregarious crème de cassis, black cherry preserves and baked plums with touches of Indian spices, cigar box and charcuterie. Full, firm and decadently fruited, it has a fantastic foundation and very long, layered and expressive finish. 3,202 cases produced.
This is a rich and tannic young red with blackberries, blueberries and currant bush. Some fresh basil. Full-bodied, chewy and impressive. Burly and fun. Needs at least three or four years to soften. Try in 2022.
