“Fluffy Billows” is the Meyers’ entry-level, plush, fruit-driven Oakville Cabernet. If you liked any of the Silver Oak Bonny’s vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons from the mid-1990s, this wine is for you. Part of the wine is sourced from Bonny’s, and the rest is from purchased fruit from Oakville.
The Meyers think this is their best “Fluffy Billows” to date, describing “Blackberry and ripe currant intermingle with anise, cardamom, and a hint of bell pepper. Toasted wood comes wafting through with each sip but is it oak or cedar, perhaps even a hint of eucalyptus.” We also get Oakville’s signature cassis fruit and a touch of white pepper. Soft, fluffy in texture, low-acid, full-throttle Cabernet. Try this wine with a big ol’ flatiron steak sandwich with sundried tomato aioli.
Having grown up in and around the cellar at Silver Oak, Matt Meyer seemed destined to continue his late father Justin's winemaking vision. After selling their share of the famed Napa winery to their longtime partners, Matt decided to chart his own course in Mendocino's Yorkville Highlands with a focus on Syrah and Port. But as tends to happen with the constant tinkering at small wineries, Matt, along with winemaking help from his Aussie wife Karen and mother Bonny, expanded the lineup to include a few more mainstream offerings, several of which we've selected for your consideration here. Matt is well aware of the legacy he's a part of, and has every intention of keeping the torch lit and held high in the cellar.
