If you like your Zin to have bite, ‘Rattlesnake’ is lying in wait with explosive dark fruit and plenty of spice. Named for the rattlesnakes that live among the vines (take a moment to appreciate that it’s not our job to tend those grapes!) this full-bodied Zin, containing 10% Petite Sirah, strikes early with baked raspberries and blackberry pie alongside cedar and earth. Beautifully balanced and seamlessly woven, the only antidote for the first sip is several more!

It's hard to fathom how Emmanuel Goldstein and his business partner Benjamin Dreyfus managed to plant what is now known as Monte Rosso Vineyard, back in 1886. Without backhoes, pile-drivers, or any kind of machinery, they installed over 130 acres of vines on steep, rocky red slopes. Just a few years later, a 20,000 case winery, known as Mount Pisgah, was open and humming along. Crippled by Prohibition, but still selling grapes, by 1938, Goldstein's heirs were eager to sell the vineyard and abandoned winery. Along came Louis M. Martini — who refused to lose his favorite grape source to a competitor — and the rest is history. He purchased and re-named the vineyard "Monte Rosso," for its iron-rich soils, created when Mt. Veeder erupted many millennia ago. This storied vineyard is riddled with ancient vines, which have cranked out so many great wines over the years for Ravenswood, T-Vine, Biale, and Bedrock, not to mention Louis Martini. Today a new brand has been created by Monte Rosso's owners to pay tribute to the original winery, Mount Pisgah, and create a way to showcase the greatness of Monte Rosso. Pisgah is Hebrew for Peak, and therefore the new winery is known as Mount Peak.

The 2016 Zinfandel Rattlesnake contains 10% Petite Sirah and was aged in new French (41%) and American (7%) oak barrels for 14 months. Medium garnet-purple colored, it leaps forth with baked raspberries, kirsch and blackberry pie notes pus nuances of dusty soil, cinnamon stick, dried roses and oolong tea with a hint of spearmint. Full-bodied, rich and spicy in the mouth, it has a plush texture and fantastic freshness, finishing with a minty lift.
