2016 Roy Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

2016 was a landmark vintage in Napa Valley and Roy Estate has planted its flag with this offering. Intense dark fruit is wrapped in tobacco, cigar box and fresh mountain herbs on the nose. The palate brings an inviting hint of sweetness into play, balancing the vibrant blackberry, blueberry and plum. Layered and opulent, this will just keep evolving over the next 15+ years but feel free to decant it early for a taste of a brilliant vintage.

Some wines we offer you very clearly illustrate the mission of Bounty Hunter, and what sets us apart from our peers. Roy Estate, tucked away in Soda Canyon on the eastern edge of Napa Valley, is a prime example. We’ve been supporters since their inaugural vintage [2004], and now that the wine is garnering monster scores, we’re in prime position to get a great allocation of their incredibly small production. It’s what we do. With the help of Helen Turley, in 2002 Shirley Roy and her husband, the late Charles Roy, developed this very rocky site, once home to a Wappo indian village. Today the Roys’ Cabernet, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and vines are about 14 years old, and certainly coming into their prime. And with Philippe Melka on board—an alum of Petrus, Dominus, and Ridge—the winemaking acumen in play has next to no peers in the Valley. It shows in the wines, which are ripe and viscerally thrilling!

Wine Advocate

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Petit Verdot, aged in 70% new French oak. Deep garnet-purple in color, it comes bursting from the glass with bold crème de cassis, blueberry compote, dark chocolate and candied violets with touches of charcuterie, fragrant soil and cinnamon stick. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is charged with exciting energy, featuring loads of black and blue fruit sparks and a fine-grained, plush frame, finishing with great length and a compelling touch of minerality.
