1974 Andre Tchelistcheff deemed the wine in Cask 23 so delicious it should be bottled on its own. Since then, Cask 23 has been a blend of Fay and S.L.V. Vineyard’s best vineyard blocks to create one of Napa’s most iconic wines. The Wine Advocate notes it, “feautures compelling, youthful notes of freshly crushed red and black currants, black cherries, kirsch and mocha.” In our 25th year of business, it is wines like these that keep us excited for the next 25!
"Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars is unquestionably one of Napa Valley’s benchmark producers. At the now legendary “Spurrier Tasting” of ’76, this operation topped the world’s best – most notably the Bordeaux first growths – and sent shock waves through the wine world. It was the first time that an American winery had ever gone toe-to-toe with the Old World and delivered a haymaker, and the fact that the judges were French only made it sweeter. It was a turning point for the entire California wine industry. Now in their fifth decade, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars has expanded their portfolio to include some fabulous whites to accompany their muscular Cabs. We wouldn’t expect anything less from the winery that changed it all. They’ve made a few changes internally as well... a partnership between Ste. Michelle Wine Estates and Marchesi Antinori proudly accepted the stewardship of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars and its legacy in 2007, cinching their success for years to come."
The deep purple-black colored barrel sample of 2016 Cask 23 Cabernet Sauvignon features compelling, youthful notes of freshly crushed red and black currants, black cherries, kirsch and mocha with nuances of Marmite toast, roasted nuts, underbrush and truffles. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a very firm frame of super ripe tannins supporting the multilayered flavors, finishing on an epically long, lingering fragrant earth note. Beautiful.
The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Cask 23 is powerful and savory in the glass, with tons of both aromatic nuance and supporting structure that give the wine gravitas as well as a very clear sense of direction. The plum, blackberry jam, grilled herb, lavender and dark spice notes are all very finely drawn in this big but polished Cabernet Sauvignon from Stag's Leap Wine Cellars.
