It was the vision of Jim Barrett and the confidence of his son, Bo, that first brought Chateau Montelena and the true potential of California to the attention of the wider wine world. Today, Bo Barrett carries the torch and captures the unique character of Calistoga’s volcanic soils in an incredibly floral and opulent Cab filled with sweet fruit and baking spices. The contrast of velvet tannins and bright acid plays perfectly against all the fresh fruit and marzipan richness on a youthful, vibrant palate.
The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate shows the racier, more voluptuous side of the vintage. A burst of super-ripe red cherry fruit, spice, mint, tobacco and cedar gives the wine an extra kick of exoticism that is a signature of the year, and a bit out of character for Montelena. Even so, the wine retains its super-classic sense of structure. Today, the 2017 is clearly still recovering from its recent bottling a few months ago, but it has so much to offer.
