The combination of warm temperatures and deep clay soils makes Coquerel's vineyard ideal terroir for the Portuguese varietal Verdelho, one of the wine world’s best-kept secrets in white wine, known not just for the sweet wines of Madeira, but increasingly in mainland Portugal. Verdelho produces wines with ravishing lime blossom and tropical aromas like pineapple and kumquat, with a rich, fulfilling mouth-feel. A Napa example at this price is quite a treat to explore!
Coquerel Family Wine Estates was founded in 2005 by Clay and Brenda Cockerell, just beyond the town of Calistoga at the north end of the Napa Valley. Clay Cockerell is a third-generation dermatologist and fourth-generation physician originally from Abilene, Texas. Today he operates a private practice in Dallas and also teaches dermatopathology at the University of Texas. Clay and Brenda have been avid wine lovers for more than 30 years. Years ago, while visiting the Napa Valley, they decided the time was right to make their own wines. Coquerel was born. “Coquerel” is the old French root of their family name, Cockerell. The centerpiece of their winery is the estate vineyard, a picturesque property that sits in the afternoon shadows of the Mayacamas Mountains.
