2017 Crossbarn Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
Another excellent offering from Paul Hobbs, this wine comes loaded with cassis, boysenberry, and tobacco leaf aromas, and notes of thyme and clove. The Wine Advocate says "Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley features vibrant notions of crushed wild blueberries, black cherries and cassis with touches of cigar box, black tea and wild sage. Medium to full-bodied with a full frame of ripe, grainy tannins, it has seamless freshness laced through the energetic fruit, finishing long and juicy. " A true bargain in Cabernet Sauvignon if ever we saw one!
The name Paul Hobbs is synonymous with fine California winemaking. Born into a farming family in New York, Paul borrowed early life experience to reinvent modern winemaking by employing a classical approach that pays the utmost attention to quality farming and treating the fruit minimally so that it can convey a true sense of place. While his uncanny ability to ferret out unique and expressive vineyards and undiscovered regions has only enhanced his reputation, a resume that includes winemaking stints at Opus One and Simi, as well as consulting projects with Peter Michael, Fisher Vineyards and Lewis has helped position himself as one of California's best guiding hands in the cellar. All the wine projects lucky enough to be associated with Paul Hobbs are farmed sustainably. Furthermore, crop yields are kept low to boost flavor intensity, grapes are sorted by hand, juice is turned to wine with the aid of native yeasts and the wines are bottled without fining or filtration. Paul's reach spans far and wide, with his own wineries Paul Hobbs and CrossBarn in California, and Viña Cobos in Argentina. Word on the street is that he's even got his hands on grapes from Chile, Uruguay, France and Armenia. He's got us wondering, what will this globetrotting winemaker do next?

This is a really excellent CrossBarn with beautiful currant and savory character. Hint of menthol. Full-bodied, round and flavorful. Yet, it’s not overdone. Ready to drink! Tastes like a Napa cab for double the price.

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Crossbarn comes from the superstar winemaker Paul Hobbs and is a solid value in 2017 Napa Valley Cabernet. Upfront violets, plums, exotic spices, and orange blossom notes all emerge from this expressive, medium to full-bodied, plush effort that has lots of charm. It has the vintage's slightly firm tannins yet should keep nicely for 7-8 years, if not longer.

Ripe and focused, with a core of fresh plum and boysenberry flavors that pumps along, liberally laced with dark licorice and sweet toast notes. A brambly accent at the end keeps this just honest enough. A crowd-pleaser. (JM)

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley leaps from the glass with vivacious Morello cherries, black raspberries and redcurrants scents followed by wafts of sandalwood, spice cake and camphor with a touch of dark chocolate. Medium-bodied, the softly textured palate bursts with juicy red and black berry flavors, finishing with great freshness.

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is soft, supple and easygoing - all qualities that make it a good choice for drinking now and over the next few years. Sweet red cherry and plum abound in this juicy wine with plenty of forward, plump fruit and no hard edges. Most of the fruit is from Paul Hobbs's Nathan Coombs and Broken Rock estates. This is very nicely done.
