2017 Diamond Creek 'Volcanic Hill' Cabernet Sauvignon Diamond Mountain


Volcanic Hill is 8 acres of south facing hillside with gray fluffy volcanic ash soil deposited from the eruption of Mt. Konocti 8 million years ago. It is the warmest of the 3 vineyards and produces long-lived, full bodied and intense wines with a smoky richness and supple tannins. This massive, structured Cab has impeccable freshness, a 30-year wine for sure.

When the late Al Brounstein carved out a rugged parcel on the slopes of Diamond Mountain almost 50 years ago, he made California history. Three separate parcels (actually four if you include the microscopic "Lake" block) with three distinct soil types were identified and planted in the hopes that they would yield three wines with their own personalities. Four decades hence, Al's vision has been validated, and his family has carried on with what at the time must have seemed like borderline lunacy. The style has evolved - these wines are drinkable far sooner than some of their earlier brethren - but the focus on quality most definitely has not. Beautiful aromas of brambleberries and blueberries with some conifer and mushrooms. Floral, too. Medium to full body, very fine tannins and succulent fruit and spices. Extremely long and subtle. Glorious and refined now, but will be better with age.
