As Duckhorn Vineyards approaches their 40th anniversary, the estate’s reputation has never been better. Ask any wine lover, and they’re sure to know the name Duckhorn. That’s at least due, in part, to their dedication to making great Merlot as a stand-out varietal wine from the beginning. They were the first house to take Merlot seriously, and their efforts were rewarded by essentially becoming the benchmark for that varietal in California. If there was going to be one high-end Merlot on a sommelier’s wine list, more often than not, it was Duckhorn. This is a Napa Valley cabernet that does everything right. Renee Ary blends fruit from Duckhorn’s estate with grapes from growers, including 12 percent merlot to point up the luscious texture, aging it for 16 months in French oak barrels (half of them new), without the wine becoming overtly oaky. It’s a wine of elegance and restraint, delicious in its sweet purple-plum intensity, succulent in its earthy tannins. Those mineral tannins retreat into the finish, allowing the savory fruit to move in. Accessible now, this will only improve with a few years in bottle.
