2017 Jonata 'Fenix' Proprietary Red Ballard Canyon

(Net Item - no discounts apply)

Winemaker Matt Dees notes that this wine is "heady and perfumed with an intoxicating nose that immediately pulls you in with notes of ripe black fruit, almond brioche and violets." You'll find accenting notes of fresh leather, blackberry and coffee. It's full-bodied and ripe, with a juicy quality that envelopes the palate. With depth and complexity we're amazed by its silky tone and lively structure. This is a wine so compelling that you're going to want to open it immediately, and while we agree you should, stash a few bottles in the cellar for future decadence.

That low rumbling sound you hear is Jonata’s (hoe-na-ta) rocket engines warming up for takeoff. Established as a cousin winery to Napa’s acclaimed Screaming Eagle, their first commercial vintage in 2004 caused a stir among mailing list cognoscenti. Then the momentum began to build in the trade. And then Robert Parker called them “one of California’s most exciting new wineries” in a review, and the floodgates blasted open with collectors and connoisseurs scrambling to find their wares. Folks, we’re thrilled to tell you where you can get them! As Robert Parker has remarked, “What they are accomplishing with Bordeaux varietals is mind-boggling.” We can’t really make it any easier for you…

Checking in as a final blend of 40% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 8% Petit Verdot, the 2017 Fenix reveals a saturated purple color as well as sexy notes of black cherries, currants, ground herbs, chocolate, and earth. Ripe, fleshy, full-bodied, and loaded with fruit, it still shows the vintage’s more elegant, classic style. It's a beautiful, sexy wine that does everything right.
