Kapscandy has a proven track record of creating world class Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. This incredible Cab is no exception. The Yountville stalwart wine blooms from the glass with notes of violets, black cherry jam, marzipan, and tobacco. A brilliant effort from Lou and Louis Kapcsándy!
Lou Kapcsándy has seen it all in his 80 years. He was a freedom fighter in the Hungarian revolution of 1956, a refugee from the Soviets, served proudly in the US Army, and had a highly successful career as a chemical engineer before starting his own Bordeaux import company with his son Louis Jr. in 1999. Lou first came to the Napa Valley in the early 1960s, so when in 2000 Yountville’s State Lane Vineyard—the core of so many great Beringer Private Reserve wines—became available, he pounced. He replanted the vineyard to tighter spacing, hired the late Denis Malbec of Château Latour as a consultant, and one of the great wines of the Napa Valley was born.
Leading off the 2017s from barrel, the 2017 Estate Cuvee is Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated and includes 8% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. This beauty has a Château Margaux-like complexity as well as sexiness, followed by notes of blueberries, red currants, incense, and spicy oak. It's rounded, fruit-forward, and textured, with the forward, fleshy, flamboyant style of the vintage front and center. It doesn't have the density of the 2016 yet is more approachable.A barrel sample, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Cuvée is blended of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot aging in 55% new French oak, 18% new Hungarian oak and 27% second fill French oak. Deep garnet-purple colored, it bursts forth out of the glass with gregarious blackberries, black cherries and licorice notes with touches of kirsch, candied violets, menthol and pencil shavings plus a waft of tobacco. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the mouth with vibrant black and red fruit layers with a soft, velvety frame and bold freshness, finishing long and perfumed.
